When Panic Hits
As many of you know I've been working with Whitney Miller, owner of Transcend Health & Wellness. She is my running coach, but there's SO MUCH more to what she does. She not only coaches me physically but helps me with my mindset. Whitney coaches on identifying, reframing, and transforming mindset habits. We have weekly calls and discuss what's going on in my life and some of the challenges I've been facing personally and professionally. She is amazing at really dissecting my thoughts and digging deep. She makes me answer some tough questions that I would rather not even think about let alone discuss lol. When it comes to my emotions and feelings, I tend to hold things in and basically wish them away- I hate confrontation and I hate feeling all the things.
Unfortunately I've learned the hard way that you cannot live life like that. For me, the "holding back" has caused some major anxiety and worry. So much so, that I've been dealing with full blown panic attacks. If you've ever experienced one you know how scary they can be. You seem like you have no control of your body, you can't tell it to calm down, or to slow your heart rate or even stop shaking for that matter. It is completely frightening. Thankfully the last few times I've had one or feel one coming on, I'm with the only person in my life that knows exactly what to do when this happens. But what happens when that person isn't there or able to help? I won't always have my safety net ready to shake me out of these attacks and that in of itself is a scary thought. Whitney gave me some great things to focus on when the anxiety starts to kick in:
Deep and slow breathing :: This helps calm my state of thinking and my emotions to a lesser pace. It also helps my body to relax and for the uncontrollable shakes not settle in.
Thinking of a specific word :: Whitney last week asked me to identify one word that I want to be feeling every day. Peace. Peace. My body and my souls needs peace. So that is my word to focus on.
Do you struggle with anxiety? If so, try these steps and I'm telling you they help so much! When the anxiety, worry, fear and panic set in, take hold of those emotions and start to think of peace, calming things that don't exacerbate the situation. I also go to one of my anchors that we identified in one of our sessions- this is something that is a reminder for me personally to take a breath, keep me grounded and remember where I am in my journey. This is the anchor I cling on to:
The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. (Lamentations 3:22-24)
I am not close to where I want to be yet, but I have a great person alongside me right now that is helping, and fighting with me. I'll be sharing more about our sessions in future blog posts because the information and what I've learned is SO GOOD and I know there are others who can use guidance in the same areas I struggle with daily.
